Legacy & Lessons from the Cuyahoga River

June 7, 4:00-8:30 Kent, OH

This program will open sixteen days of commemorations across the North Coast, of the 50th Anniversary of the fire near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. The Symposium will include poetry contributions from across the region, recognition of local environmental projects accomplished by community groups and individuals, and an evening lecture given my James White, former executive director of the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization when the Remedial Action Plan and Director of Sustainable Infrastructure Programs of the Cleveland Cuyahoga Port Authority. The Poetry Reading to celebrate Ohio’s Crooked River with selected poetry readings will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday Afternoon at the Wick Poetry Center of Kent State University. The presentation titled “Legacy & Lessons from the Cuyahoga River will begin at 7pm at KSU’s Cene Lecture Hall.

Explore family friendly activities, children’s art, environmental & historical displays, aquatic animals, Macroinvertebrate Detecting and stewardship opportunities. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be sharing safe boating “hands on” demonstrations and water fun awareness. Learn about the watershed restoration and ways to explore Kent’s hike, bike, historical and water trails. FREE native tree seedlings & milkweed seeds!

The first stop on the Xtinguish Torch Fest

Main Street Bridge by Franklin Mills Riveredge Park

The first Festival in the series is held in beautiful Downtown Kent! This event will include an arts/cultural/music fest, a “passing of the torch” ceremony with local officials and River Stewards, the installation and dedication of a commemorative Eternal Flame on the river, and the showcasing of this destination along the Cuyahoga River Water Trail! Partnered with WICK Poetry Center and Kent State University.
