The Conservation Poster Contest has been known as the “5th Grade Poster Contest” for many years in Portage County. This year we opened up the competition to all K-12 students in Portage County. We selected one winner from each age division submitted to send on to state to compete in the NACD Poster Contest. Roughly 700 K-12 students in Portage County participated in the 2019 Conservation Poster Contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Portage County Garden Center and the Portage SWCD. The theme for this year’s contest was “Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper”. This contest gives teachers an opportunity to introduce environmental concepts to their classes. Various Portage County Garden Center Clubs work very hard to sponsor participating schools and facilitate the school contests. Countywide winners receive award certificates, seedlings, and prizes from the SWCD. Congratulations to this years winners, good luck at states!

Life in the soil is something many of us take for granted. In a handful of healthy soil, one can expect to find more living organisms than people on Earth.
